Programme Structure

The Finance programme at Yorkʼs Mumbai campus is designed to take you from solid foundations to advanced expertise in the world of finance. The first semester introduces you to the building blocks of finance, economic principles, financial markets, institutions, and instruments, while teaching you to think critically and analytically. Moving into semester two, youʼll dive into corporate finance, investment strategies, and risk management. By the final semester, youʼll focus on an independent research project, supported by expert faculty, helping you apply your skills to investigate real-world financial questions. Studying in Mumbai offers the added advantage of exposure to Indiaʼs thriving financial sector, helping you connect theory with real-world financial practice and preparing you for an impactful career in global finance.

Youʼll explore financial markets, corporate governance, and investment management, while building strong evaluation skills. Quantitative methods and practical exercises strengthen your analytical toolkit, while guided research projects teach you how to approach problems critically and confidently.

The programme comprises 160 credits of core modules, with students then able to take an optional module (20 credits).

Learning outcomes for this programme:
  • Display a systematic and critical understanding of the behaviour and operations of both financial institutions and the finance function within large organisations, the environments in which they operate, and the role of the financial sector in the wider economic system.
  • Display a systematic understanding of a wide range of financial instruments (including: equities; fixed-income products; derivative securities; currencies), the properties of the markets on which they trade, and the purposes for which they are used in practice by investment managers and non-financial organisations.
  • Appraise and evaluate the major theories used across a wide range of finance subdisciplines (including: asset pricing; investment management; financial risk management; corporate finance; and international financial decisions) finance, strategy and international business, be able to describe the assumptions and mathematics methods behind these theories and communicate clearly to academic and managerial audiences the advantages and limitations of applying these theories to specific practical contexts.
  • Solve complex financial analytical problems by locating, downloading and cleaning the most appropriate financial and related data, and applying the most relevant statistical and computational techniques to these data to address the problem at hand.
  • Exercise judgement when balancing the fiduciary duty of decision-makers to maximise financial value against the ethical and sustainability goals of a wide range of organisational stakeholders.
  • Produce well-reasoned written communications based on analytical reasoning and supported, where necessary, by data-based evidence, and display other personal transferable skills including: the ability to work positively within a group; act inclusively within a diverse academic community; reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses; identify areas for growth in their own knowledge and practice by engaging in continuing professional development.
  • Formulate a financial project proposal; identify the relevant academic and practitioner literature that best inform the project; identify and obtain the most appropriate data and methodologies for undertaking the project; independently carry out the project efficiently and to deadline; and effectively communicate results in a way that will persuade both expert and non-expert audiences.

Entry requirements

Undergraduate degree

Must have a Bachelor’s degree with more than 60% in UG, with one quantitative element module. Quantitative subjects include economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics.

English language

Must have scored 75% in Standard XII* OR 

Have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in each component

* Standard XII English is accepted from all Indian boards. If stipulated grades have not been met, then applicants will need to consider taking IELTS or any of the other approved tests.
